Why do these spots appear?
There are many factors in relationship to the appearance of these spots. Many of these are as a result of exposure to the sun without adequate protection. Many sensitive skins can present abnormal tans and this is commonly known as photosensitivity which can also be related to some cosmetics and the taking of medication.
The spots from pregnancy are associated with increased levels of hormones and is more frequent in women with dark skin (Hispanics, Orientals, Asians etc)
Actually with the presence of these pigmentation spots on the face and the back of the hands are considered as a sign of photo-aging that appear with the passing of the years.
How and when do they appear?
The spots are usually a clear brown like and start as a freckle and are able to increase in size and colour intensity with time. They are found on the face, neck, décolleté and hands. On the face they are most frequently found on the forehead, temples, cheek, upper lip and nose and in some cases they can have a symmetrical pattern that is they can be on both sides of the face.
How do we treat the spots?
Many years ago there were very few things that we could do to treat the pigmentation lesions and the only way to cover them up was to use make-up. More recently dermabrasion, cryosurgery and other techniques can be used but they could leave a scar or white spots without any pigmentation. Nowadays the laser technique has revolutionised the treatment and pigmentation lesions can be virtually erased. The latest treatment for these spots is to use the Intense Light Laser or IPL. The application of creams and some specific medication is frequently associated with the use of IPL and by taking safety precautions we obtain the best results.

Are there any side-effects?
There may appear light redness or local swelling in the area that was treated which disappears in a few days. Normally the spots turn darker in the first few days making them more visible for a while. The appearance of the skin improves with time turning it lighter and younger. It is important to limit sun exposure before and after treatment and with the advice of the clinic we can eliminate side-effects.

- Study, understand and follow all preoperative requirements that you have been given by the surgical team.
- Stop sunbathing and using sun-beds for a minimum of 2 weeks before the session.
- Tell the doctor if at any time before your treatment you feel unwell of have an infection such as a cold.
- Stop using any creams that contain retinol acids.
